Setting up an ‘official’ facebook page for your school

I’m hoping that you have already watched the first screencast that has given a guided tour of our Facebook presence as this one goes through the steps to set one up for your own school. Before we start there are a few things that you will need to do:

  • Have talked this through thoroughly with the SLT in school and only be proceeding once you have the green light. Do make sure that you go to SLT with good justifications for setting up and have a clear vision as to how the presence will be used to support the students and their learning. A lack of knowledge and understanding of social media will result in low confidence levels so you need to go in prepared.
  • Have a comments policy written and ready to add – this is important as the document will regulate the page. I’ve included our policy at the bottom of this post. it is important that this is clear and accessible from within the Facebook presence.
  • Have set up a new school email account that will be used to manage the official school Facebook presence. E.g. [email protected]<school domain> The reasons for this are explained in the video
  • Have already set up your other social media presences (Twitter/Youtube) – again I would advise you to set up user accounts that are against specific email accounts. E.g. [email protected]<school domain> These presence will add value, rich media and further interest to the school’s social presence online.

Note – in order to get your custom facebook url for your page you need to have at least 25 likes before you can through the process which is started by visiting

    How do I add a Comments Policy page accessible in the same area as Wall and Info etc. for the life of me I can’t find out how to do this

    interesting blog and video. I am setting up a page for a Primary School. Anyway I can block comments completely and just have it forward facing. I am worried about malicious comments. Thanks

      Thanks for the feedback. As suggested, starting out with your page as just forward facing is a good starting point. Seeing how the dynamic of the page builds over time can help you make a more informed judgement about whether you open up commenting or not.

    Great post. How did you reconcile having to use a real name to set up the initial Facebook account?

      Hi Rob,
      I initially used my own personal FB account to set up the page. I had no issue doing this as no posts to the page are made from an individual they are made to the page by the page. I then delegated admin rights to other school users (Head etc..) using their own FB accounts. When a member of staff leaves the school they are removed from an admin of the page. You just need to be careful to remove yourself as an admin from the page as the creator if you are sole admin as you will lose management of the page. By following this simple workflow administration of the page follows school staffing as it changes.
